The Department of English, Languages, and Communication welcomed Andrew Steiner as an assistant professor of creative writing in 2026.
He arrived with six years of teaching experience in academic and non-degree settings. He was a fiction writer in residence at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan (2024-25) and served as an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University (2024) and Juniata College (2023-25), a visiting lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand (2023), and a graduate instructor at the University of Iowa (2020-22).
For two and a half years he also led creative writing courses with three online writing platforms – A Writing Room, The Porch Writers’ Collective, and the Lighthouse Writers Workshop. He specializes in the teaching of fiction and narrative nonfiction that draw upon time, place, and faith under pressure.
His stories and essays have been featured in Narrative, The Common, EPOCH, Grain, and other publications. He earned a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2022 and a bachelor’s degree in English from Calvin University in 2011.
He is married to Pavlina and recently moved to Portland. Prior to relocating to Oregon, he completed a seven-day trek in the Dolomites, a mountain range in Italy. He welcomes your hiking recommendations.
