He has published and presented internationally on immersive technology, virtual assistants and robots in education, and preparing educators for emerging workforce needs. His work has earned him the Apple Distinguished Educator designation and the Christa McAuliffe Award from the National Council of the Social Studies. He and his wife, Cadie, a Portland Public Schools teacher, live in North Portland, where they are active in their parish community and serve on several nonprofit boards. They enjoy time with their three children, their assortment of pets, and — when possible — trying to make it to a nearby baseball stadium to watch his beloved New York Mets.
