Overview

Join an international community of pilgrims to walk one of the most famous roads in the world. Physical adventure meets spiritual journey, as we travel on foot for 40 days, traversing 500 miles from the French Pyrenees, across northern Spain, to the great medieval shrine of St. James at Santiago de Compostela.

Highlights

Join a group of 12-15 students for a transformative forty day expedition across Northern Spain on the legendary Camino Francés. This is an immersive physical and spiritual journey that follows a trail worn smooth by millions of seekers over a thousand years. We will live out of a backpack and stay in communal pilgrim hostels, embracing a life of simplicity. Each day we walk 12 to 20 miles through the landscapes of Spain, from the red earth of the Rioja vineyards to the mist-covered mountains of Galicia. The pace challenges the body but will let us unplug from the noise of modern life and engage in prayer, self-reflection, and history. The road will be demanding. You will face blisters, early mornings, and the mental test of high-mileage days. But the rewards are great, such as placing a stone at the Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) to symbolize leaving your burdens behind, or conquering the ascent to O Cebreiro to watch the sunrise over ancient Celtic roundhouses. When we reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, we will celebrate our arrival at the noon Pilgrim’s Mass, joining a history that stretches back to the Middle Ages. You will return home with dirty boots, tired legs, but a renewed spirit.

Tentative Itinerary

On most days we will have breakfast at the hostel and start hiking around 8am, reach the next town/village by mid-afternoon, with a stop on the way for lunch. The rest of the day is free time to rest or visit sites.
