Greece & Mediterranean Islands

Highlights

This course and trip will explore the history and culture of Greece, including Athens and the Mediterranean islands of Aegina and Crete. While we experience our study and travel together we will bring into clearer focus the plight of the many displaced people groups who have, for millennia, traversed the turquoise waters and sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean in search of refuge. We will attempt to better understand the causes for the modern-day refugee crisis, what some of the barriers are for asylum-seekers, and what the Bible specifically commands us as Jesus-followers regarding our responsibility to care for sojourners. Our travels will start and end in Athens, Greece, a key hub for Mediterranean voyages. We will stand on Mars Hill and contemplate the words Paul spoke to the listening Athenians. Other southern Greek mainland stops will include the Parthenon/Acropolis and a visit to the Greek Island of Aegina. We will also visit Corinth and other key cultural sites in southern Greece. From there we will travel to Crete, the fifth largest Island in Greece. We will visit historical and cultural sites, as well as the Pink Beach, Samaria Gorge and Spinalonga (abandoned Leper colony). Next we will travel north across the Aegean Sea to Thessaloniki and follow Paul's journey from Philippi back down to Athens, stopping to hike Mt. Olympus, visiting the monasteries of Meteora and exploring the ancient city of Delphi. Several days of our trip will also be dedicated to peace and reconciliation work, serving refugees alongside local Christians.
