Highlights

Aotearoa New Zealand: Nature, Culture, Adventure

This trip centers on the north island of Aorearoa New Zealand, home to Maori, the indigenous people of the island, and the Pakeha, descendants of European settlers. We will explore and seek to understand the incredible natural landscape of the island and the complex cultural histories that have taken place there, along with engaging in some of New Zealand’s world famous adventure tourism.

Some highlights of the trip include Maori cultural activities, hiking the famous Tongariro Crossing–the best day hike in New Zealand, possibly the world–exploring beaches and islands along the north coast with possible options for snorkeling, swimming with dolphins and other water adventures. We will observe wildlife unique to Oceania at the Zealandia ecosanctuary, understand how the filing of Lord of the Rings has impacted the tourism industry of New Zealand (including a visit to Hobbiton), and bungee jump as an optional extension. There will be some free time for choosing your own adventures in the cities of Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington.

This will be an active trip, including several hikes. Thus, you should be in good condition to participate in these activities, but we will include some lower impact options on days of extreme physical activity. It will also be demanding intellectually and personally in terms of reflecting on the ongoing legacy of colonialism on the island, and asking what peace and justice look like today.
