Building Confidence Abroad: A Path from Newberg Classrooms to the Czech Republic
When Emmy King started studying at George Fox University, she never imagined that she would move to the Czech Republic to teach English upon graduation. But after earning her TESOL certificate and winning the competitive Fulbright ETA, she packed her bags and moved to Kutná Hora, a small town about the size of Newberg, about an hour east of Prague.
As an English major, Emmy became interested in the international travel opportunities made possible by a TESOL certificate, so she enrolled in the program and began teaching with the Community Language Classes in Newberg (a joint-venture between the Newberg School District, Friendsview, and George Fox University).
After exploring some different opportunities to teach abroad, Emmy decided to apply for the Fulbright ETA Award. Despite the odds—the Fulbright has a 15% acceptance rate for the Czech Republic—Emmy was selected for the 2025-2026 school year.

Emmy King
I didn't know that teaching English abroad was a viable option until I took the TESOL courses at Fox and started talking with professors about their own experiences. Even as I was in the process of applying for the Fulbright, I was battling doubts. Was I really the type of person who could teach abroad? Was it even worth a shot? But the faculty in the English Department wouldn't let me give up. They helped me edit my application, wrote me letters of recommendation, and encouraged me to keep going. I couldn't have done this without them.
