Spanish Placement
Eligibility Requirements
SPAN 201 Eligibility:
- Recommended to have completed at least 2 years of high school Spanish or received a score of 3 on the AP Spanish Language & Culture exam to be successful in this course.
SPAN 301 Eligibility:
- Students who have completed 3 or more years of high school Spanish or received a score of 4 or higher on the AP Spanish exam may be eligible.
If a student has a Seal of Biliteracy from:
- Oregon: Credit by exam for 301-302. Student is eligible for all classes above SPAN 302
- Washington or Alaska: Eligible for SPAN 301. (Note: Only Anchorage School District and the lower Kusokwim School District offer accepted seals.)
- California:
- IB SL score of 5: Eligible for SPAN 201.
- IB HL score of 5: Eligible for SPAN 202.
- AP Score of 3: Eligible for SPAN 202.
- AP Score of 4 or higher: Eligible for SPAN 301.
- Not accepted as equivalent if only completed through a high school class.
Challenging Placement

Students who believe they may be prepared for a higher-level course may request a one-on-one interview with a faculty member from the Spanish Department. Interviews are available after August 15.
